In Our Words:
Josy's Teaching Career

In 1946, Josy began her education career at Columbia Institute teaching returning veterans at night school. In 1947 she was hired by the Philadelphia Public School System, where she spent well over 40 years. She taught English, French, and Spanish at a variety of junior high and middle schools, including Fitzsimmons, Holmes, Sayre, Beeber, and Lamberton. During José’s sabbatical in 1968, she taught at Aylesford Secondary School in England.

Josy was committed to her students academically and beyond the classroom, meeting frequently with parents and guidance counselors to address issues which she believed could be negatively affecting their well-being. Throughout her life, she had chance encounters with former students who nostalgically remembered her significant impact on their lives.

For many years Josy administered a weekly school-wide assembly program. She brought in outside speakers, discussed cultural events, and created programs to provide the inner-city students with new educational experiences. She co-authored Ici et La, a French language textbook used in the Philadelphia school system.

Josy was extremely principled in her teaching and related practices (as in all matters in her life). This sometimes resulted in conflicts with administrators as she advocated for fairness and raised issues which ruffled feathers.
