Josy took piano lessons from Frank J. Potamkin, a noted musician and scholar who authored Modern Piano Pedagogy: Its Scope, published in 1936. He also composed Dance for Two Pianos, published in 1952.
She was a serious student, who internalized her mentor's techniques, frequently referring to the appropriate pedagogy for learning. She differentiated the 'two types of music': Classical and Jazz, by defining Classical as following rules and Jazz being devoid of rules.
At a young age she performed classical music as a soloist, and continued playing for her family into her 90s. She also studied music, writing a high school thesis called The Spirit of Music. One of her favorite performance pieces was The Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov (which is rated in difficulty as a 9/9).
