In Our Words:
Family Life

José and Josy were devoted to each other throughout their entire lives. They had three children, Malva (born in 1952 and named for Josy’s mother, Malvina), Lois (born in 1953 and named for José’s father, Laib) and Marty (born in 1955 and named for José’s uncle Motty).

The family lived in the Philadelphia area and travelled often, largely in connection with José’s sabbaticals and conferences. They were known for parties and celebrations, water pistol fights inside the house, food and beverage tasting contests, their owl collection, and Mexican food and decorations.

José was known for his stories, jokes, and irreverence, as well as for initiating conversations with people he had not met. Josy enjoyed sharing her favorite stories, relating different versions that were adapted to her current audience. José truly believed that, while one must grow older, one does not need to grow up. Josy often attempted to impose some limits to his high jinks, although she sometimes fell into fits of uncontrollable laughter; the family referred to these as her "being bewitched."

José and Josy delighted in their five grandchildren: Jessica, Victor, Jeremy, Dan, and Jenessa. They especially enjoyed taking them to the playground at the end of their block on Juniper Road.

They established individual relationships with each of them, celebrating birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. José and Josy took their grandchildren to art and science museums and to Philadelphia Orchestra concerts. They created a tradition of taking each grandchild to the opera to celebrate their 16th birthday. They enjoyed sharing cultural events with their grandchildren, including a visit to Wilmington to see an exhibit of the Riches of the Romanovs.

José and Josy celebrated and danced at all 5 B’nai Mitzvahs and attended numerous concerts and school plays. They got to enjoy many school celebrations, including Jessica’s college graduation. All five grandchildren attended Josy’s PhD graduation and special parties for their 50th and 60th anniversaries, as well as special tribute dinners for their 80th birthdays and Josy’s 90th birthday. After José passed, Josy attended college graduations for all the other grandchildren and danced with Jeremy at his wedding.
