In Our Words:
José's Post-Retirement Work
José officially retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in 1991, although he continued to serve on the Institutional Review Board (‘The Human Committee’) overseeing the safety of research that involved hospital patients. He continued as an active member of the Board for the rest of his life. On February 14, 2008, he was awarded Emeritus Status in recognition of his contributions to research science and the protection of human subjects.
Several pharmaceutical and food companies hired José as a consultant to assist them with scientific matters, including medical claims about their products and challenges in manufacturing. He was often able to diagnose problems and recommend solutions quickly, even during initial telephone conversations, so many of his assignments were quite brief.
José became a Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, where he continued to work with a team of experts to lecture, develop curricula, and design course assessments. Each professor wrote and graded the questions that pertained to the content of lectures they had presented. José advocated for questions that truly measured student knowledge, dissuading other members of his team from using questions that he felt were designed to trick students.
He gave his final lecture on October 4, 2007, continuing to include humor throughout to keep the students’ attention.
