A Legacy of Giving
Research and education were at the heart of José and Josy’s values. They supported the advancement of research and education by funding several scholarships and awards.
- In 1993 José and Josy created The Drs. Josephine F. and Joseph L. Rabinowitz Scholarship for a biochemistry student, which is now awarded at St. Joseph’s University.*
- In 1994 they created The Laib and Rachel Rabinowitz Memorial Scholarship in Honor of Joseph and Josephine Rabinowitz at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. It is awarded to a student entering their second year of study who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need.
- Their legacy project was The Joseph and Josephine Rabinowitz Award for Excellence in Research, which they established at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2002. The winners are announced annually at Penn Dental Medicine’s Research Day.
After José’s passing in 2009, the faculty and staff of the School of Dental Medicine honored him by instituting
The Joseph L Rabinowitz Memorial Lecture.
The family also created
The Dr. Joseph L. Rabinowitz Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research, which has supported the work of Dr. Bert Vogelstein.
*This award was first established at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science,
where José earned his undergraduate degree. In 1997 PCPS officially changed its
name to University of the Sciences, and merged with St Joseph University
in 2022. With each change the scholarship transferred, and it is still operational.
